Dakar: Loeb wins on Tuesday, Al-Attiyah ahead of overall victory

On the eighth stage on Tuesday, the Toyota driver had to admit defeat to record world rally champion Sebastien Loeb (France) in a Peugeot, but Al-Attiyah remains comfortably in the lead in the classification. With two sections remaining, the 48-year-old is separated by 46:29 minutes from second-placed Nani Roma (Spain/Mini).

However, the 361 kilometers from San Juan de Marcona to Pisco on Tuesday were all about Loeb. The 44-year-old prevailed with a 7:27 minute lead over Al-Attiyah, clinched his fourth win of the day and is only 16 seconds behind Nani in third place. Loeb's chances of overall victory had already fallen drastically on Monday when he lost almost half an hour due to an electronic problem.

For record winner Stephane Peterhansel (France), the ranking continued to decline. The 53-year-old in the JCW buggy of the German team X-raid crossed the finish line around half an hour behind the day's winner Loeb.

In the motorcycle classification, Ricky Brabec's dream of overall victory was shattered; the overall leader from the USA had to retire due to engine failure. The 27-year-old parked his Honda just 56 kilometers after the start of the stage in San Juan de Marcona and no longer has a chance of becoming the first American to win a Dakar. The problems are nothing new for Brabec. The Californian, who was 7:47 minutes ahead of Adrien van Beveren (France/Yamaha) and 8:28 minutes ahead of Toby Price (Australia/KTM) in Peru after seven stages, had also retired last year after an engine failure - back then on the 13th stage. In 2017, he was eliminated on the tenth day of the competition.

Price came third on Tuesday when Austrian Matthias Walkner (KTM) won and took first place in the classification. Van Beveren fell back to fifth place.
