Dakar Rally: Day’s victory for Loeb

The Toyota duo, which won overall victory ten years ago, was satisfied with fourth place on Tuesday on the 342 kilometers between Pisco and San Juan de Marcona in Peru, 1:31 minutes behind the day's winner Sebastien Loeb (France/Peugeot).

"It was actually an unspectacular day for us. We got through well and had no problems," summarized von Zitzewitz (50): "It was a very nice stage with great dune passages, although a bit tricky with soft sand and a few holes."

The two-time Dakar winner Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar), who won the short opening stage over 84 kilometers between the Peruvian capital Lima and Pisco on Monday, lost 7:17 minutes to the nine-time rally world champion Loeb in his Toyota, which was eleventh on the day. In the overall ranking, Al-Attiyah fell back to eighth place (+3:26 minutes).

The top favorites of the 41st Dakar also lost a lot of time. Last year's winner Carlos Sainz (Spain) from the German team Dakar record winner Stephane Peterhansel (France) only finished the stage in X-raid's JCW buggy in 4th position (+40:2). In the overall ranking, the 28-year-old is 17th, 15:09 minutes behind the leader.

Peugeot had dominated the long-distance rally in the last three editions and celebrated overall victories with Peterhansel (2016 and 2017) and Sainz (2018). But then the French manufacturer withdrew from the factory. The Peugeots used this year are privately operated. Loeb's daily success demonstrated the continued competitiveness of the French manufacturer.

The third section between San Juan de Marcona and Arequipa over 331 kilometers is on the program on Wednesday. After a total of 2636 kilometers, the Dakar Rally, which this year will be held entirely on Peruvian soil, ends on January 17th (Thursday) in Lima.
