“Inappropriate”: Formula 1 abolishes grid girls

"Although the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Grands Prix for decades, we believe this custom is inconsistent with our brand values and is clearly at odds with modern societal norms," said Formula's marketing chief Sean Bratches -1-Owner Liberty Media.

The racing series' new owner believes that Grid Girls are no longer "suitable" or "relevant to Formula 1 and its fans". However, the pilots had recently campaigned for the beautiful women to remain on the starting grid. “The grid girls have to stay,” said Red Bull driver Max Verstappen to the Bild newspaper. And Nico Hülkenberg said: "It would be a real shame if they took the eye jewelry off the grid."

Before every Grand Prix, the Grid Girls posed on the starting grid with name and starting number signs in front of the pilots, and after the race they stood in line for the three fastest drivers in front of the award ceremony. Grid boys and children have already been used in some races.

The new owners of the premier class had already indicated in the ongoing sexism debate that they wanted to reconsider the use of grid girls. The new season starts on March 25th in Australia - without Grid Girls.
