Alonso: “Triple Crown” project is shaky

The 37-year-old Spaniard did not get past 26st place on Saturday in the first part of qualifying for the oval classic on May 31th - in order to ensure his participation early, the McLaren-Chevrolet driver would have had to finish in the top 30.

Alonso only has one chance to make it into the starting field of 33 and thus keep his dream of completing the so-called “Triple Crown” alive as only the second driver: On Sunday (local time) the six weakest drivers will leave Starting positions 31 to 33 in the first qualifying section.

“We haven't had the speed all week. I don't think we'll suddenly find him overnight. I just have to make a clean attempt,” said Alonso, who had a serious crash in training on Wednesday and complained of technical problems on Saturday. Alonso had played a leading role in his Indy debut in 2017 before engine failure forced him to retire in the final section of the race.

Starting places ten to 30 have already been assigned since Saturday. The top nine, including last year's winner Will Power (Australia/Penske-Chevrolet), will take pole position for the 103rd edition of the race in the “Noodle Pot” on Sunday.

In addition to the Indy 500, the Triple Crown in motorsport includes the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monte Carlo, which Alonso won in 2006 and 2007, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in which the Asturian triumphed last year. So far, only the Briton Graham Hill has been able to enter the winners' list in all three races, which are fundamentally different in their characteristics.
