Alonso starts from second place at Le Mans

The 37-year-old finished second in qualifying in the Toyota with his teammates Sebastien Buemi (Switzerland) and Kazuki Nakajima (Japan). The sister car starts from pole. As expected, Toyota is heading into the long-distance classic from the front row. As in the previous year, the Japanese are the only factory team at the start in the most powerful LMP1 class. In 2018 Alonso won with Buemi and Nakajima.

And the statistics are clear: Almost every victory in the current season of the World Endurance Championship, which ends with the 24 Hours of Le Mans, clearly went to Toyota, with only one exception: at Silverstone, a technical violation subsequently deprived the Japanese of the double success . The superiority is due to technical reasons; only the works team has modern hybrid drives in their cars, which generate significantly more power. The technology also brings advantages when it comes to pit stops and strategy.

It already seems clear: Only the other Toyota team with Mike Conway (Great Britain), Kamui Kobayashi (Japan) and Jose Maria Lopez (Argentina) can prevent Alonso from winning again - or a technical defect.

Although Alonso recently claimed that the private teams basically had the same chances of winning as Toyota, his works team always benefited from “perfect” performances.

Alonso can't get any closer to his big dream of winning the Triple Crown of motorsport this weekend. He has already celebrated victories at the Formula 1 race in Monaco and last year he also made a mark at Le Mans. However, he failed to qualify for the Indy 500 this year - Alonso will not be able to achieve motorsport immortality until next year at the earliest.
