Formula 3: Schumacher misses early title win

Hockenheim (SID) Mick Schumacher (19) missed out on an early title win in the Formula 3 European Championship. The son of record Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher finished only twelfth in the first race of the season finale at Hockenheim, failing to score any points. His championship rival, Daniel Ticktum (Great Britain), benefited from this, finishing fifth and maintaining his title hopes. However, with a 39-point lead over Ticktum, Schumacher still holds all the cards. The second race of the day takes place on Saturday, starting at 4:30 p.m. (n-tv), in which Schumacher will start from second place. Ticktum will have to start from 15th place. Schumacher entered the final race weekend with a 49-point lead. The signs were clear: If he finished ahead of Ticktum, the title would be his. But Schumacher's hopes of clinching the championship early were dashed right in the early stages of the race. After an intense duel with his Prema teammate Marcus Armstrong (New Zealand), both drivers had to pit to have damage to their cars repaired. With the safety car deployed at the same time, Schumacher quickly rejoined the field, but his recovery didn't lead him into the points. China's Zhou Guanyu secured the win ahead of Russia's Robert Schwartzman. Estonian Juri Vips, 2017 ADAC Formula 4 champion, finished third.
