Mick Schumacher celebrates his first victory in Formula 2

The Prema rookie relegated the Japanese Nobuharu Matsushita (Carlin) and Sergio Sette Camara (DAMS) from Brazil to second and third place in the sprint race at the Hungaroring. “In the last few laps my heart was beating pretty fast,” said Schumacher, “the tires were wearing out, I had pressure the whole time and had to look in the mirrors because Matsushita was keeping me busy. Now I’m just happy.”

In the overall standings, the son of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher climbed to eleventh place with 45 points and confirms his current good form: After a dry spell that lasted seven races, Schumacher now finished in the points in four of the last five races. Nyck de Vries (ART/196) from the Netherlands still holds the overall lead ahead of Canadian Nicholas Latifi (DAMS/166), who won the main race on Saturday.

In this, Schumacher's hopes of a top result were disappointed. In the rainy qualifying on Friday he impressed in fourth place, but despite his good starting position he only finished eighth. In doing so, he laid the foundation for his victory in the sprint: The top eight of the main race start in reverse order, so eighth place means pole position.

At the start on Sunday, Matsushita got off better and put Schumacher under pressure, but he was able to defend his position in the first corner. The Japanese stayed in the German's slipstream throughout the entire race, but Schumacher made no mistakes and ultimately secured victory by 1,4 seconds. His previous best result was fourth place in Austria at the end of June after a race to catch up.
