After horror accident: Flörsch's eleven-hour operation "went positively"

Macau (SID) Racing driver Sophia Flörsch (17) underwent successful surgery after her serious accident at the Formula 3 world finale on Monday. According to the treating doctors, the eleven-hour procedure "went positively," her father told motorsport-magazin.com: "Sophia will now be monitored in the intensive care unit and will also spend the night there from Monday to Tuesday." The operation began at 10.00 a.m. local time (03.00 a.m. CET), a spokesman for the Macau health authority said. Flörsch suffered a fracture to his spine in the crash during the race on Sunday. The doctors worked “deliberately slowly” “to avoid risks. The operation so far has been good and without complications,” it was written on Twitter in the name of Flörsch. According to her father, Flörsch broke her seventh cervical vertebra, but the spinal cord was not damaged. When Flörsch was rescued from the car, the Munich woman was fully conscious and later announced on Twitter that she was fine. Her Japanese colleague Sho Tsuboi, with whom she collided, as well as two photographers and a marshal also suffered injuries. The International Automobile Federation FIA has meanwhile announced investigations to find out what caused the accident and to draw “the necessary conclusions,” as FIA President Jean Todt announced. "Unfortunately, we can only guess what happened. The images from Sophia's onboard camera were confiscated by the FIA, so we couldn't evaluate them yet," said Frits van Amersfoort, Flörsch team boss, to the Kölner Express. There have been three fatal accidents at the Macau Grand Prix in recent years. The British motorcycle star Daniel Hegarty had an accident there in 2017; five years earlier, the Portuguese motorcycle racer Luis Carreira and the car racer Phillip Yau from Hong Kong died on the track.
