Shock for the DTM: from 2021 also without Audi

Audi will withdraw from the racing series at the end of the year, the Ingolstadt-based company announced on Monday. This would leave BMW as the only manufacturer; Mercedes had already said goodbye at the end of 2018. Hopeful Aston Martin left the DTM in January after just one year. “Today is a difficult day for motorsport in Germany and Europe,” said DTM boss Gerhard Berger: “I extremely regret Audi’s decision. It must be respected, even if the short notice with which it was communicated poses particular challenges for me, our partner BMW and all other teams. “We would have liked to have taken action here – especially in Corona times – in the interests of our common society.” The former Formula 1 driver spoke of the situation now being “further aggravated,” “and the future of the DTM will depend very much on how the partners and sponsors react to this decision.” The sudden withdrawal of its competitor and partner also caught BMW by surprise. “We as the BMW Group were surprised by the announced Audi exit,” said the company: “Together with the umbrella organization ITR, we have always fought passionately for the future and the further development of the DTM. We will now assess the situation and possible consequences from all perspectives.” The Austrian Berger now expects Audi to “handle the planned exit in a proper, responsible and cooperative manner. Until then, my entire commitment is to the 2020 racing season.” The DTM has also not been able to start its season due to the pandemic, but is still hoping for a few races this year. Audi announced that it had made the decision “against the background of the economic challenges resulting from the corona pandemic”. From 2021, use in the electric racing series Formula E and customer racing will be the focus of the company's motorsport activities.
