US racing driver Earnhardt survives plane crash

The 44-year-old, his wife, their daughter and the two pilots are safe, the motorsport athlete's sister, Kelley Earnhardt, wrote on Twitter on Thursday. All were taken to the hospital.

I can confirm Dale, Amy & Isla along with his two pilots were involved in a crash in Bristol TN this afternoon. Everyone is safe and has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation. We have no further information at this time. Thank you for your understanding.

Local station WCYB quoted a fire department official as saying everyone on board survived the crash and no one was seriously injured. ESPN reported that Earnhardt told a reporter in a text message that he and his family were fine.

The crash occurred at the Elizabethton Municipal Airport. Pictures showed a small plane with flames and thick smoke coming out of it.

According to ESPN, Dale Earnhardt Junior was supposed to take part in a NASCAR “Xfinity Series” race on August 31st. The 44-year-old is the son of racing driver Dale Earnhardt, who died as a result of a serious head injury after crashing into the concrete wall in the infamous “Daytona 2001” race in 500.
