South Tyrolean winter sports successes honored

Last winter gave the South Tyroleans many beautiful moments. The athletes from the province of Bolzano once again impressed with great results in the youth categories as well as in the general class last season. South Tyrol was once again able to live up to its reputation as a winter sports talent factory.

14 medals in the juniors

In the youth categories, the young athletes won a total of 14 medals in international and continental competitions. The sledders collected five of them, and the artificial track sledders won three of them at the Junior World Championships in Park City (two gold and one silver). The natural track luge athletes, on the other hand, celebrated a gold and a bronze medal at the European Championships in Novouralsk. The alpine skiers celebrated three podium finishes: Alex Zingerle was crowned Junior Vice World Champion in the giant slalom in Mont St. Anne, Verena Gasslitter won gold in the giant slalom at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in Brasov and, together with Hannes Zingerle and Nicole Delago, took silver in the Team event. Snowboarder Elisa Profanter was also successful at the same event. She climbed to the top podium in the parallel giant slalom, while Nadya Ochner was able to celebrate the bronze medal in the same discipline at the Junior World Championships in Erzurum. Debora Agreiter's cross-country skiing collection has gained two medals this winter. She won silver and bronze at the U23 World Championships in Liberec. Liberec was also a good place for Evelyn Insam, who finished the Junior World Ski Jumping Championships in second place. Biathlete Benjamin Plaickner also placed in the top three. At the Junior European Championships in Bansko he came third.

South Tyroleans are also among the main players in the World Cup

Last season, South Tyrol's winter athletes were once again in a class of their own in the World Cup. In total they achieved 20 wins and 72 podiums, with 30 different athletes. That's two thirds of the total yield of the Italian winter sports association FISI (107 podium places).

The tobogganers were the most successful, with a total of 46 podium places (13 on the artificial track and 33 on the natural track). Patrick Pigneter not only celebrated two overall World Cup victories (in the single-seater and in the double-seater with Florian Clara from Val Badia), but also twelve World Cup victories. The 25-year-old from Völs won four individual races this year, took five victories in the doubles with Clara and also three team relays.

In the artificial track luge category, Armin Zöggeler won his 55th World Cup race in Lake Placid in February ahead of Dominik Filehner and David Mair. There had not been a South Tyrolean triple victory since the 1985/1986 season. At that time, Norbert Huber, Paul Hildgartner and Hansjörg Raffl were on the podium in Valdaora.

Five World Cup victories in downhill

The South Tyrolean speed specialists Christof Innerhofer and Dominik Paris also set a record for Alpine skiers. They won a total of five descents: Innerhofer won in Beaver Creak, Wengen and Garmisch, while Paris prevailed in Bormio and Kitzbühel. There are also two podium places each from Manfred Mölgg and Werner Heel and third place from Innerhofer in the SuperG in Kitzbühel. It's just a shame that the women didn't make it onto the podium this year.

The snowboarders also achieved nine podium places. Roland Filehner was able to celebrate his eighth World Cup victory in Rogla, Slovenia, while Omar Visintin from Algunder was at the top of the podium for the first time in his career at the Boardercross in Montafon.

There was no victory, but a total of seven podium places in cross-country skiing with Roland Clara and David Hofer, in ski jumping with Val Gardena's Evelyn Insam and Elena Runggaldier and in biathlon with Lukas Hofer, Dorothea Wierer, Michela Ponza and Karin Oberhofer.
