First South Tyrolean medal at the World Curling Championships

This year too, the South Tyrolean distance athletes were able to celebrate winning the bronze medal in the team ranking of the distance competition at the World Curling Championships. The individual qualification and the team competition took place in front of 300 to 400 enthusiastic battle enthusiasts from Austria and Bavaria on the home straight of the Olympic ice ring in Innsbruck. This time, the strongest South Tyrolean distance athlete was Stefan Thurner. The Rittner achieved a super performance with 88,92 meters in the third attempt. Thurner made it to the final in eighth place. Thomas Pichler (83,46) in tenth place, Werner Bozner (77,71) in eleventh place and Norbert Lang (73,97) in twelfth place were also able to qualify for the final. “I am very satisfied with the performance of my protégés and winning the bronze medal. For the first time, all four South Tyrolean distance athletes were able to qualify for the individual final at a World Cup,” beamed the South Tyrolean distance specialist, Josef Priller.

Maria Romen impresses in the target competition

There was a very strong performance from Maria Romen in the target competition yesterday. The woman from Eppan, who was fourth after the preliminary round at the last European Championships in Bled, Slovenia, and slipped back to sixth place in the final, is second after the preliminary round with 305 points and is on course for a medal. Only the Austrian Simone Steiner is ahead of her with 350 points. Magdalena Karnutsch from Mölten, 13th with 254 points, and Annelies Huber from Stegen, 16th with 232 points were eliminated. In the men's category, however, Walter Hanni and Walter Nocker from Eppan qualified for the final of the best eight with 300 points in seventh and eighth place. Stefan Roalter did not make it to the final in eleventh place with 275 points.
