Olympics 2022 in South Tyrol?

The “Freedoms” Roland Tinkhauser, Ulli Mair, Thomas Egger, Pius Leitner and Siegmar Stocker submitted a motion on Wednesday in the three-member state parliament, i.e. the state parliaments of South Tyrol, Tyrol and Trentino as well as the Vorarlberg state parliament with observer status, according to which the European region should apply for the Winter Olympics and the Paralmypian Games.

The application letter states: “The European region of Tyrol is one of the leading winter sports regions in the world. Not only are people in Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino enthusiastic about winter sports, but the region is home to numerous top, world-class athletes. There are enough sporting figureheads in the European region of Tyrol.” The five politicians also argue that there is practically no Olympic discipline that cannot be held today. However, it goes without saying that existing structures and facilities have to withstand the challenges of an Olympic competition and the crowds of spectators and that this requires adjustments to certain sports facilities.

“New sports facilities may also need to be built, which can guarantee the region not only short-term but sustainable added value. “Newly built or adapted facilities would of course be made available to competitive sports but also to popular sports after the end of the Olympic Games,” says the two-page application.

The preparations for an Olympic bid would have to be transferred to a bidding company that has yet to be created, which could of course also be made up of the previous marketing companies of the individual countries, according to the document submitted by the five politicians.

The application will be considered on March 30th at the Tri-State Parliament in Meran. South Tyrol's sports world will certainly follow developments regarding the Olympics with interest.

Olympics 2022 in South Tyrol?

Five politicians today submitted an application to the Interregional State Parliament Commission - three-member state parliament for the European region of Tyrol's application for the 24th Olympic Winter Games and the 13th Paralympic Winter Games in 2022.
