“Less than an hour ago, Alex called me and told me that he had bad news for me. Then he told me that he was the athlete who was excluded from the Olympic Games," Schwazer's coach Michele Didoni was quoted as saying by the Italian news agency ANSA.

The athletics association FIDAL is disappointed

"This afternoon we were confronted with the news that Alex Schwazer is said to have tested positive during a doping test and that he was subsequently excluded from the Olympic Games by the National Olympic Committee CONI," writes the athletics association FIDAL in a first release on Monday evening.

"We support the CONI's decision and are very disappointed about the incident. We emphasize that we strongly condemn doping abuse. The athletics association has very strict rules in this regard and we do not tolerate any deviations from our chosen course," said the message further.

Arese: “Alex didn’t need that”

FIDAL President Franco Arese said of the incident: "I'm sad, it's a bitter day. Schwazer could have won one of a few medals, but he'd rather have one less medal and fight doping instead.
