Biathletes come away empty-handed in the relay with Belarus' victory

Pyeongchang (SID) The favored German biathletes surprisingly came away empty-handed in the relay at the Winter Olympics. In difficult wind conditions in Pyeongchang, Franziska Preuß (Haag), Denise Herrmann (Oberwiesenthal) and Franziska Hildebrand (Clausthal-Zellerfeld) each had one penalty. Double Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier (Partenkirchen/1 Nachlader) led the quartet as the last runner, only eighth, 53,9 seconds behind the winner Belarus. With her fourth gold medal (4-1-1), the Belarusian final runner Darja Domratschewa replaced Kati Wilhelm (3-3-1) as the most successful biathlete at the Olympics. Silver went to the Swedish relay, France secured bronze. Germany won seven of the last eight races, including the 2017 World Cup title. The only Olympic gold medals so far have been 1998 in Nagano and 2002 in Salt Lake City. Four years ago in Sochi, the relay team was without any medals; 11th place was the worst result at the Winter Games. After gold in the sprint and pursuit and bronze in the individual, Dahlmeier missed her fourth medal in Pyeongchang. This would have made her the first biathlete to win four Olympic medals in one edition.
