Abu Dhabi: Valverde wins final stage and tour

Abu Dhabi (SID) The Spanish professional cyclist Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) secured overall victory in the Abu Dhabi Tour with a success on the final stage. The 37-year-old broke away on the final climb on the final section from Al Ain/Qasr Al Muwaiji to Jebel Hafeet together with the Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and retained the upper hand in a direct duel after 199 km. In the overall standings, Valverde took the lead, 17 seconds ahead of the Dutchman Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb). Emanuel Buchmann from Ravensburg crossed the finish line in 15th place and completed the five-day tour in tenth position, 1:37 minutes behind, as the best German. Valverde suffered a broken kneecap during the Tour de France in 2017, but at almost 38 he is now back in top form. On the third stage, Phil Bauhaus (Sunweb), Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin) and Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) ensured a German triple victory. On the final day, Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) was part of a breakaway group for a long time, but was caught like his companions on the final climb.
