Olympic journey through time – today: February 18th

Just like on February 17th, there is only one Olympic highlight that should be remembered the next day - but what a highlight: in the history of South Tyrolean sport there has only been a South Tyrolean double victory at the Olympics once, and that was on February 18, 1994 in Norway.

Two brothers in a double victory for the doubles In the Hunderfossen ice channel near Lillehammer, two brothers wrote sports history with their double-seater partners: 23-year-old Wilfried Huber won the gold together with Kurt Brugger, who was one year older than him, ahead of 29-year-old Norbert Huber and his 36-year-old partner Hansjörg Raffl .

In the daily newspaper “Dolomiten” from February 19.2.1994, XNUMX you can read: “Lillehammer became an Olympic triumph for the South Tyrolean sledders. After gold for Gerda Weißensteiner and bronze for Armin Zöggeler, there was even a double victory at the end of the Olympic tobogganing competitions in the doubles. The crown princes became kings. Kurt Brugger and Willy Huber won ahead of Hansjörg Raffl and Norbert Huber. The favorites Krauße/Behrendt from Germany only had bronze.” The most successful games for South Tyrol and Italy The Lillehammer Winter Games are not only considered the most beautiful and successful of all time, but are also remembered as the “most profitable” for South Tyrol and Italy. South Tyrol athletes won eight medals: three gold ones with Brugger/Huber, Gerda Weißensteiner and Hugo Herrnhof as part of the short track relay, one silver one with Raffl/Huber and four bronze ones with Isolde Kostner, who even won two in downhill and super-G , Günther Huber in the two-man bobsleigh and Armin Zöggeler.
