Osaka wins US Open - Williams completely freaks out

The 36-year-old American repeatedly shouted at referee Carlos Ramos in the heated atmosphere in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, received three warnings and thus first a point and then a game deduction.

Osaka was not impressed by the favorite's theater and converted her second match point after 79 minutes to make it 6:2, 6:4. The 20-year-old became the first player from Japan in tennis history to win a Grand Slam tournament, and did so in the final against a player who she had previously described as her great idol.

After referee Ramos warned her for unauthorized coaching at the start of the second set, the favorite snapped at him: “I don’t cheat to win. I'd rather lose." But the drama continued, Williams just wouldn't calm down. At another break, she called Ramos a thief: “You stole a point from me.” The Portuguese had no choice but to take a game away from Williams. The six-time tournament winner burst into tears and stuttered: “That’s not fair, that’s not fair. Just because I’m a woman.”

Due to her scandalous performance, Williams missed out on her historic 24th Grand Slam title, which would equal Australia's Margaret Court's record. She had already lost in the final against Angelique Kerber (Kiel) at Wimbledon in mid-July. Williams gave birth to her daughter Olympia just a year ago and returned to the tour in March.
