Icardi was surprisingly succeeded as captain of Spalletti's team by goalkeeper Samir Handanovic on Wednesday and then refused to travel with the team to the Europa League game at Rapid Vienna (1-0). Inter also did not want to explain the demotion in more detail; coach Luciano Spalletti only spoke of “serious reasons” for the decision.

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio emphasized that the contract discussions with his wife and advisor Vanda Nara had nothing to do with the cancellation, but indicated that there could be further consequences due to the cancellation of the Vienna game: “We had a problem with his role as captain, his behavior and how he approached the office and those around him. The contract negotiations and what happens on the field are two different things. We will see tomorrow if there is a temporary suspension like there was for Radja Nainggolan.” Rumors about a move to Juventus After Icardi's demotion, the rumor mill was now really heated up: As the Italian journalist Valer De Maggio from calciomercato.com reports, Icardi has already reached an agreement with Juventus. “I think Inter know that Icardi already has an agreement with Juventus. (...) Removing his captaincy is an important decision and I am committed to the fact that Icardi has already reached an agreement with Juventus for me,” said De Maggio.
