FIS President Kasper: “Fortunately no outsider victories”

Regarding the course of the World Cup in Åre, which was influenced by the weather, Kasper told the dpa that they had been lucky so far not to have had any outsider victories. “Outsider victories, if there are several, are poor examples of the fairness of the race. Lots of people are eligible, but if a Mexican won the downhill, I would say that wouldn't be the best advertisement for skiing. There would be no 100 percent fair World Cup. This is not possible. Otherwise we would be in the hall or the laboratory.”

Kasper about the parallel races and the combination According to Kasper, the parallel races in the Ski World Cup should have a uniform format next season. “We cannot continue with this mess. The Alpine Committee has a firm mandate to come up with a solution in the spring,” said Kasper.

Three different formats are currently being tested; at the 2021 World Cup in Cortina d'Ampezzo there will be individual world champions in a parallel race for the first time. The combination also remains, meaning that 13 medal decisions will be made. In addition, the World Cup will again have to carry out several (three to four) combinations, said 75-year-old Kasper, which is why a working group has been set up.

“There were a lot of people who were convinced that we shouldn’t just give up on our oldest discipline,” said Kasper, explaining the decision for the combination. “On the other hand, there are also some people who support parallel slalom. It was virtually impossible to find a majority for one or the other. Kasper has been elected FIS President until 2022. When asked whether an early end was an option for him, he said: “I have reserved the right to stop around 2020. That would be an option. But I haven't decided anything yet. Otherwise I would be a lame duck too.” He commented on the accusation of slowness and the backlog of reforms in the FIS. "That depends. We at the FIS have always been willing to reform as much as possible. But of course we are also a cumbersome construct.”
