Kerschbaumer is looking forward to a short and intensive season

There was also uncertainty in cycling for a long time. But now one thing is certain: there will be a mountain bike season for professionals. And this one will have it all. “It will be an intense few weeks. But I think it suits me. In any case, the motivation is already huge,” says Gerhard Kerschbaumer, looking forward to it finally starting again.

In September there are 4 World Cup stages on the program for the cross-country specialists. The races kick off in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, at the beginning of September. Finally, from September 11th to 13th, the races will take place in Val di Sole (Trentino) on Sulzberg. For South Tyrol’s bikers, the races in nearby Val di Sole are a kind of “home race”. However, no spectators will likely be allowed this time. Further World Cup races are planned a week later in Les Gets, France. The last cross-country races of the season in the World Cup will finally take place in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic (September 29th to October 4th).

The big highlight of the season is the World Cup from October 5th to 11th in Leogang, Austria. The cross-country specialist title fights were originally scheduled to take place in Albstadt, Germany at the end of June, but had to be canceled due to the coronavirus crisis. In Leogang, medals will be awarded for both cross-country mountain bikers and downhill riders. On the hunt for medals “Due to the cancellation of the Olympic Games, the World Cup is of course the big highlight this year,” Kerschbaumer looks ahead. His goal: a medal. In 2018 he won silver in Lenzerheide behind the top Swiss favorite Nino Schurter and thus celebrated his greatest success to date. The route in Leogang is new for Kerschbaumer. “But I think it suits me,” says the 28-year-old Kerschbaumer optimistically.

In any case, he wants to fight for victories and podium places again in this short but intense season. “I actually didn’t expect there would be any races this year. “That’s why I’m even more motivated now,” emphasizes “Gery.”
