On Tuesday the professional cyclists start the mountain-heavy final week of the anniversary Giro. From Rovetta in Lombardy to Bormio, the program covers 222 kilometers and 5400 meters of altitude. The Dutchman Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) is currently leading the overall ranking ahead of the Colombian Nairo Quintana (Movistar/+2.41 minutes) and the Frenchman Thibaut Pinot (FDJ/+3.21 minutes). Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain – Merida) is the best Italian in fourth place, 4 minutes behind Dumoulin. The Dutchman is difficult to beat on short, steep climbs this year, but when the altitude increases and these are then spread over several climbs, then Tom Dumoulin also shows his difficulties. In the final week, the Dutchman will have to defend himself primarily from the attacks of the mountain driving specialists.

The queen stage on Tuesday

The 16th stage on Tuesday is considered the most difficult section and has three mountain classifications. The first climb is the Mortirolo. The professional cyclists will climb the mountain from the south side and reach the first mountain classification after 12,6 km and 900 meters in altitude. After a descent on a narrow road, the cyclists pass Bormio for the first time. From here begins the 21,7 km long climb to the Stelvio Pass, where the stage will cross the South Tyrolean border. The professional cyclists will then cycle down the 48 hairpin bends to Prad and then turn towards Switzerland at Glurns. The last climb on the program is the Umbrail Pass with 13,4 km, before reaching the finish in Bormio after a short descent.
