The Transalp – Kaltern begins on Sunday as a stage destination on July 2nd

For the 13th time this year, the starting signal is given for the Transalp, which not only offers breathtaking sporting events, but also offers the 1200 participants unique scenery. It starts on Sunday, June 28th in Sonthofen, Bavaria. From there it goes in seven daily stages through four countries across the Alps before the participants cross the finish line in Arco on Lake Garda on July 4th. In between there are no less than 884,61 kilometers, 19.132 meters of altitude and 21 Alpine passes, including names like Flüela, Bernina, Gavia and Mortirolo.

This year, South Tyrol has a destination in Kaltern. The stage on Thursday, July 2nd, is one of the longest of the entire tour at 136,16 kilometers and starts in Aprica (Province of Sondrio). From there it leads to the Tonale Pass, down into the Val di Sole and over the Nonsberg up to the Mendel Pass, from where the descent to Kaltern begins. Although the time is taken on the Kalterer Höhe, the stage officially ends - as befits South Tyrol's number one wine village - in front of the Kaltern winery.

On Friday, July 3rd, the Transalp 2015 leaves Kaltern again and rolls through Tramin, Kurtatsch and Margreid towards Trento, but with detours to the Cembra and Fiemme Valleys as well as to the Valsugana. The queen stage takes place one day before the South Tyrolean stages. On July 1st, the participants will start in Livigno on a 142,86 kilometer long stage with five passes, at the end of which they will have conquered 3475 meters in altitude and, last but not least, the Gavia and Mortirolo passes.

Incidentally, the competition starts in teams of two and in five different categories: women, men, mixed, masters (the combined age of the two team members is over 80) and grand masters (the combined age is over 100). This year there are also seven participants from South Tyrol and twelve from Trentino.
