Track Cycling World Championships: Miriam Welte wins time trial gold - Levy misses bronze

Apeldoorn (SID) Miriam Welte (Kaiserslautern) won her second gold in the time trial at the Track Cycling World Championships. Last year's runner-up won the non-Olympic 500 m race in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, in 33,150 seconds ahead of the defending Russian champion Daria Schmelewa (0,087 seconds back) and local hero Elis Ligtlee (0,334). Pauline Grabosch (Erfurt) finished fourth and missed the podium by three thousandths of a second. For Welte it is the second individual title in the 500 m time trial after 2014. "It's unbelievable. I've been so close so many times. That's why I wanted it so much today," said Welte. With a view to eleven-time world champion Kristina Vogel's (Erfurt) chance of winning gold in the Keirin on Sunday, she added: "Kristina said: 'Let's do it like we did in Cali (2014) and get all four gold medals.' Now it's her turn tomorrow." Like Grabosch and Lisa Brennauer, European champion Maximilian Levy only finished in an ungrateful fourth place. The 30-year-old from Cottbus, who surprisingly qualified for the top four, lost 0-2 to the French European Championship third-placed Sebastien Vigier and missed his second medal in these title fights after taking Keirin bronze on Thursday. Brennauer, who set a German record of 3:32,485 minutes over the 3000 m in qualifying, lost the race for bronze to Catlin Kelly (USA/3:35,920) in 3:34,658 minutes. The American Chloe Dygert won in 3:20,060 minutes, setting a world record. Welte won the team sprint on Wednesday together with her long-term partner Vogel and Grabosch. Grabosch drove with Welte in the qualification. After sprint gold and bronze for Vogel and Grabosch and Keirin bronze for Levy, it is already the fifth medal for the Association of German Cyclists (BDR) in these title fights.
