Track Cycling World Championships: Vogel and Grabosch are in the sprint semi-finals

Apeldoorn (SID) Rio Olympic champion and top favorite Kristina Vogel is reaching for her second medal in the sprint tournament at the Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, on Friday. The 27-year-old, like 20-year-old Pauline Grabosch, made it to the last four. This means that the Association of German Cyclists (BDR) is at least assured of another precious metal. Vogel clearly prevailed in the quarterfinals against Laurine van Riessen (Netherlands) with 2-0 runs, Grabosch also eliminated Shanne Braspennincx 2-0 in another German-Dutch duel. In the semi-finals the two Erfurt women will meet directly; in the second pairing, Vice World Champion Stephanie Morton (Australia) and Wai Sze Lee (Hong Kong) will duel. Vogel is the defending champion in her flagship discipline and also dominated the previous World Cup season. On Wednesday, the Erfurt native and Miriam Welte (Kaiserslautern) made a perfect start with World Cup gold in the team sprint. Grabosch, who drove the qualifying run convincingly in the team sprint, once again made a strong impression. Welte, however, was eliminated in the round of 16.
