Cycling: Kwiatkowski celebrates overall victory at Tirreno-Adriatico

San Benedetto del Tronto (SID) The Polish professional cyclist Michal Kwiatkowski won the overall classification in the Tirreno-Adriatico stage race. On the seventh and final stage, an individual time trial over 10,1 kilometers in San Benedetto del Tronto, the 27-year-old Team Sky driver achieved eleventh place to take the lead in the overall classification ahead of Damiano Caruso (Italy/BMC Racing) and his teammate Thomas Geraint from Great Britain claims. Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome (Sky) finished 13th, 31:34 minutes behind Kwiatkowski. For Kwiatkowski it was the second success of the year after the overall victory at the Tour of the Algarve in February. "I'm very happy to have won one of the most beautiful races of the year. I would like to thank the whole team who supported me so well throughout the week," said Kwiatkowski. Australian time trial specialist Dennis Rohan (BMC Racing) secured the stage victory on the Adriatic coast in 11:14 minutes. Rohan was only four seconds faster than the Dutchman Jos van Emden (LottoNL-Jumbo). The Spaniard Jonathan Castroviejo (Sky) came third, eight seconds behind. Lennard Kämna (Wedel/Sunweb) was the best German, crossing the finish line in 25st place, 21 seconds behind, and improved by nine places in the final rankings to 94th place. The four-time time trial world champion Tony Martin (Cottbus/Katusha-Alpecin) disappointed in 22nd place In the overall ranking, Martin is the best German driver in 19th place, 52:47 minutes behind Kwiatkowski.
