Report: Team Sky abused exemptions - Wiggins in focus

London (SID) A special committee of the British Parliament has made serious allegations against the cycling team Team Sky and further cast former Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins into the shadows. According to an investigation by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Sky abused medical exemptions (TUEs) to win the 2012 Tour of France with Wiggins at the helm. The report is seen in the British media as a possible “death sentence” for Team Sky. The team has been under pressure for some time because of the Wiggins case and the salbutamol affair involving four-time Tour de France winner Christopher Froome. The committee sees it as proven that Wiggins and possibly his helpers in Team Sky consumed performance-enhancing corticosteroids under the guise of exemptions - in order to prepare for the tour. Team manager David Brailsford threw the team ethos of “clean winning” overboard out of a thirst for success. The report also classifies the ominous drug delivery to Wiggins in 2011 as unreliable. Contrary to what Sky and Wiggins always claimed, the package did not contain the cough medicine Fluimucil, but rather the corticoid triamcinolone, it was said. The report emphasizes that the facts identified do not constitute a violation of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Anti-Doping Code. However, doping substances were used within this code to increase the performance of the drivers - “not just for medical necessity”. Team Sky and Wiggins denied the allegations. "I think it's sad that accusations can be made where people are accused of things they never did but are taken as facts," Wiggins said. The five-time Olympic champion told the BBC: "At no point in my career have we crossed the ethical line. I reject that 100 percent. The allegations are malicious, someone wants to smear me."
