The Penser Joch is firmly in Merano's hands - results

After the starting signal at 14.52:15 p.m. in Astfeld, a large leading group stayed together until Pens. Then, as the road became steeper and steeper, the wheat gradually separated from the chaff. A group of XNUMX became nine cyclists, and five kilometers from the finish there were suddenly only seven “pedal knights” at the front. Among them were Thomas Gschnitzer, Jarno Varesco and Stephan Unterthurner, the winners of the last three editions of the Penser Joch Grand Prix.

The decisive attack came around four kilometers from the finish line from last year's runner-up: Michael Tumler (Meran/Brao Caffè Unterthurner) ignited the turbo and reached the finish line on the 2211 meter high pass after 58.47 minutes. For the 31-year-old from Passerstadt, it was the first victory in the “classic” in the Sarntal, which was organized by the ASC Sarntal/Rad Section for the eleventh time this year.

Five cyclists break the hour mark

Jarno Varesco (58.57/Lapierre Team TN Alè) and Stephan Unterthurner (same time/Brao Caffè Unterthurner) arrived ten seconds after the day's winner Tumler. Alessandro Pinton (Team Soullimit Liotto/59.01) in fourth place and fifth, last year's winner Tomas Gschnitzter from Sterzing (Poli. Avi Bike Team/59.22) also cracked the magical hour mark.

“I am of course very satisfied. The Penser Joch Grand Prix is a very special race because you first ride flat for a relatively long time and only then do you get uphill. That's what makes this mountain race so difficult for me. Otherwise the conditions were perfect, the temperature and the wind were just right,” said winner Michael Tumler at the finish.

Women's winner Alexandra Hober sets a new personal record

Among the women, Alexandra Hober was in a class of her own. In 1:05.47 hours she broke her personal best at the GP Penser Joch. “I had a little difficulty on the flats at the beginning, but I was able to keep up with the group. I found a great rhythm on the climb and am now of course very happy to have driven up here faster than ever before,” beamed the 42-year-old from Meran from the Athletic Club Merano.

The podium was completed by Paola Raoss from Trentino (Brao Caffè Unterthurner/1:15.10) and the German Kristina Schollerer (RSV Götting-Bruckmühl/1:15.34).

The OC boss is satisfied OC boss Hartmann Stuefer from the ASC Sarntal/Rad section was once again satisfied: “I would like to congratulate the winners on their success, but also all the other cyclists who made it to the Penser Joch. I would like to thank all of our volunteers, but of course also our sponsors, without whom we would not be able to hold this race.”

The Sarn mountain classic will most likely also take place next year. Saturday, August 19th is being considered as a possible date.
