The Tour of the Alps with many highlights in South Tyrol

After the 2016th anniversary of the Trentino Randrundfahrt was celebrated in April 40, the name of the traditional tour changed, which is being organized this year under the patronage of the Euregio Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino. However, the breathtaking landscapes, the top-class international starting field and the decisive mountain finishes will still be preserved.

The field of participants and the favorites

The peloton includes 7 World teams, 7 Professional Continental teams and a National team. The winner of the Giro del Trentino 2016 will also be there: Mikel Landa (Team Sky) will be at the start with other 143 professional cyclists. The Frenchman Thibaut Pinot from World Team FDJ is also one of the favorites. The hope of the Italian fans, however, rests on veteran Michele Scarponi, who will take over the captaincy after Aru's injury-related absence. Ag2R-La Mondiale has great expectations for the Italian Domenico Pozzovivo.

The stages The first section, on Easter Monday, is driven exclusively on Austrian roads. After the start in Kufstein, the drivers will reach the finish line in the Tyrolean capital at Hungerburg at 142,3 meters above sea level after 868 kilometers.

The second stage begins on Tuesday in Innsbruck city center. The route leads, among other things, via Franzensfeste and the Pustertal to Winnebach. The professional cyclists are expected in Franzensfeste around 12.30 p.m. An hour later they will cross Bruneck and pass Dobbiaco at 14 p.m. After crossing the border into Austria, the stage finally ends in East Tyrol's Villgratental with a mountain finish.

On the third day the starting shot will be given in Niederdorf. At St. Lorenzen (around 11.15 a.m.) we head into Val Badia, where the 15-kilometer climb to the Würzjoch begins. The first riders are expected there at 12 p.m. The subsequent descent then leads to St. Andrä. After the sprint classification in Lüsen, the route goes steeply up to the Rodeneckeralm. The climb measures 12 kilometers and has a whopping 20 percent gradient in some sections. You will meet the riders at the mountain pasture at 13.15:14.15 p.m. This is followed by a longer descent via Brixen and Klausen, where the nine-kilometer final climb to Villnöß begins. The finish is scheduled for XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. and by then you can begin to see the favorites for overall victory.

After the tough third day, the “Tour of the Alps” will begin the fourth stage from Bolzano’s Walther-Platz. The first few kilometers are initially flat. In Laimburg, the cycling professionals cross the short “Kojoten Pass” and then climb the Mendel Pass from Kaltern. The athletes are expected there at around 12.20 p.m. The rest of the stage takes place in Trentino, where, after numerous climbs and descents, the finish is in Cles.

The last stage starts in Smarano. In the course of the final 192,5 kilometers, the Passo Durone and Monte Bondone still have to be conquered before finally arriving in Trento. The overall winner of the cycling tour will then be celebrated there.
