Eroica Dolomiti: Cyclists defy the weather gods

What is Eroica? The Eroica has its origins in the Tuscan region of Chianti and is intended to commemorate the times when cyclists were still considered heroes. The vintage cycling event now also has branches in all parts of the world, such as South Africa, California, Japan and most recently in San Candido. In rain, fog and freezing temperatures The adventure started shortly after 8 a.m. in Innichen, when the participants set off towards Cortina on their almost 30-year-old bicycles. There were also a few celebrities to be welcomed among the athletes, led by the 2004 Giro d'Italia winner Damiano Cunego. At first the weather held up, but on the climb to the Passo Tre Croci it started to pour rain. The participants refreshed themselves at the refreshment station at Lake Misurina, some returned to Dobbiaco, but the majority took the next step towards the finish.

The weather didn't get any friendlier on the descent through the Pragser Valley towards Niederdorf, which prompted some to make their way home via Toblach to Innichen. The most daring still dared to make the final climb towards Silvesteralm. The participants who made it this far can proudly call themselves tough cycling heroes. Much praise for the “Cena Eroica” The “Cena Eroica” at the Riese Haunold Hütte marked the end of the vintage cycling event. “When I'm among like-minded people, the so-called Eroica people, then I can only do well. Being here in the Dolomites is a spectacle. These mountains and cycling simply belong together - a bit like the region around Chianti and its gravel roads. The hospitality shown to us Eroica participants in Innichen is outstanding,” Eroica inventor Gianfranco Brocci praised the 3rd Eroica Dolomiti and then announced that the 2020th stage would also be held in September 4. Then hundreds of participants will jump back into the 30-year-old bike saddle - maybe the weather gods will play along.
