Eva Lechner defends her Italian cross country championship title

Eva Lechner from the South Tyrolean Colnago team is currently Italy's best mountain biker. As a bronze medalist at the 2011 World Cup and an Olympic participant in London, she is also internationally successful. But Eva Lechner is also an excellent crosser, as the two Italian championship titles in the last two years prove. This means she is prepared for the World Championships in Kentucky Luisville at the beginning of February.

“I felt good and was motivated to repeat my success from last year in South Tyrol,” said Lechner before the start. In the 2012 Olympic year, she impressively (and for the third time) captured the national cycling cross championship jersey in the Safety Park in Pfatten. She seemed particularly motivated in front of home fans and reached the finish line unchallenged and alone after an impressive race.

The race was similar in Vittorio Veneto. The Überetscher woman was able to leave all her opponents behind and thus win her 16th championship jersey (including MTB cross country and marathon as well as road) in green, white and red. Eva Lechner was overjoyed at the finish. “I got off to a good start, immediately tried to gain distance from the pursuers and then run my race by being able to control the course well in order to avoid mistakes and falls.” In the end, it was enough for Eva Lechner to win clearly with a gap of one minute and 30 seconds over second-placed Vania Rossi and with a lead of two minutes and 35 seconds over Valentina Scandolara in third place.

In addition to Lechner, some young South Tyrolean hopefuls were also at the start. In the U23 category, Elena Valentini won the silver medal. Hanna Santifaller reached seventh place among the juniors. Among the candidates, Anna Künig took fifth place, Franziska Lunger came 11th. In the female age group, Giada Tezzele came eleventh, ahead of Francesca Pisciali, who came 12th.

On Saturday, Carmine del Ricco from the Sunshine Racers Nals won the Masters 1 title. Among the young people, Jakob Dorigoni (8th), Leonardi Filippi (12th) and Christian Graf (22nd) took part.

In Vittorio Veneto, Eva Lechner defended the national cyclocross championship title on Sunday. For the 27-year-old from Eppan, it was the 16th Italian championship title overall.
