Former cyclist Ullrich admits drug use

“I am now doing therapy out of love for my children. The separation from Sara and the distance from my children, whom I haven't seen and hardly spoken to since Easter, took a lot out of me. As a result, I did and took things that I very much regret,” Ullrich told the Bild newspaper.

The 44-year-old denies being an addict. According to his lawyer Wolfgang Hoppe, a place in a clinic in Germany has been reserved for Jan Ullrich for some time. “Jan can go there at any time. We all hope that he gets back on his feet quickly and will support him as best we can,” Hoppe told Bild.

Ullrich hit the headlines last weekend after being arrested after an incident on his neighbor Til Schweiger's property. According to police, Ullrich was taken into custody for “violent entry and threats.” Ullrich was questioned by a judge on Saturday. The former professional cyclist was then released and banned from contacting him, said a court spokeswoman.

The night in the cell left a lasting impression on Germany's only Tour de France winner. The former cycling star complained about “inhumane conditions” in prison. “I couldn’t communicate with the officials. They only spoke Spanish and didn't understand English. I couldn’t call a lawyer,” Ullrich said. “I had to take off everything except my pants. In the very small cell there was only a cot and a towel. Feces and urine everywhere on the floor and walls. I got claustrophobic and couldn't sleep. It was one of the hardest tests of my life."
