Giro delle Dolomiti: The overall winner is Gabriel Corredor

The stage victory went to Philipp Schäddel (Germany/Team Alpecin), who put everything on one card but was not rewarded in the end. In the women's category, the Giro delle Dolomiti winner is Camila Cortes (De Rosa Santini), while Agnes Kittel (Austria/Nora Racing Team) completed the time trial fastest. The fifth stage led from Bolzano via Steinegg and Welschnofen to the Niger Pass, then on to Völs and Castelrotto, where the time trial on the Panider Sattel began. The return journey to Bolzano took place via the Val Gardena.

On the first four stages, Gabriel Corredor gained 53 seconds on his worst opponent Philipp Schäddel. On Friday, Schäddel beat the Colombian by 15.14 seconds with a time of 28 minutes - not enough to challenge the 44-year-old South American for overall victory. “I risked everything and gave full throttle from the first second. Unfortunately in the end it wasn't enough. Nevertheless, second place in the overall ranking is a great success. I would like to express my thanks to my team, but also to the many helpers – what they do during the week is incredible,” said Philipp Schäddel at the finish.

Gabriel Corredor, on the other hand, was delighted with his second overall victory after 2014: “Today's stage shouldn't have continued for another kilometer because then Schäddel would have intercepted me. I had a really hard time today, my legs just wouldn't work. That's why I'm happy that I was able to secure the overall victory across the finish line. The cycling season comes to an end for me after the Dolomites cycle tour. Together with my wife Camila (Cortes, editor's note) I will now go on vacation for a few days in South Tyrol and then in European metropolises like Paris.”

Edi Rizzi best “Azzurro” Daniel Slobodin (Germany/Winax-Food Artists) took second place on the fifth stage and is third in the overall ranking. As on Thursday, third in the time trial on the Panider saddle was Edi Rizzi (Sportler Bike Team), who was once again the best local rider. The 46-year-old from Sarner ended up fourth in the rankings.

The overall ranking of the “Giro Breve”, which included the stages on the Penser Joch and the Panider saddle, was decided by Davide Ferrari (ASD Stemax Team), ahead of the Austrian Philipp Schwarzl (Austria/Nora Racing Team) and Andreas Kofler (Dynamic Bike team) for themselves.

Cortes has everything under control – Kittel takes the day’s victory Camila Cortes, on the other hand, was able to celebrate her first overall victory in the Dolomites cycling tour among women, after finishing third in 2014. On Friday, the 35-year-old Colombian had to hand over the stage win to Agnes Kittel, who crossed the finish line in 18.13 minutes, five seconds faster than Cortes. “I was very tired today and admit that I didn't get the most out of myself. But the lead in the overall standings was enormous and I wanted to manage my strength in this heat. I had an incredibly great week. The Dolomites cycle tour is one of the most beautiful races I have ever ridden. The landscape, the people – everything is just right. We’ll be back – and we’ll take many, many Colombians with us,” promised Cortes.

Third place on Friday was taken by Barbara Zambotti from Trentino (MG.K Vis Somec LGL), who took second place in the overall ranking. Third place in the overall ranking went to Cortes' compatriot Liliana Sanchez. Kittel won the “Giro Breve” ahead of Janine Meyer (Germany/Lexxi Smartuits) and Kerstin Simon (Germany).

On Saturday team time trial in the Unterland After five individual time trials, the Dolomites cycling tour will conclude with a team time trial for the first time on Saturday. The participants start at 8.30 a.m. from Waltherplatz in Bolzano, then drive to Kurtinig, where the timed section of the wine route begins along the wine route to Kaltern. Then we head back to the Bolzano trade fair, where the 2017 Dolomites cycle tour officially comes to an end. With over 50 teams registered, expectations were clearly exceeded.
