Giro d'Italia: Gorka Izaguirre wins in Peschici

Exactly today the Giro celebrates its 100th birthday, as the very first stage of the “Corsa Rosa” was held on May 13, 1909. The eighth stage of the anniversary Giro started from Molfetta. The first 90 km were completely flat, while the remaining 100 km were very irregular and hilly. After a short and fast descent, the last 1,5 km to the finish were steeply uphill, with peak gradients of 300% being reached in the last 12 m.

This irregular terrain was particularly beneficial for the breakaway group today. When there were still 10 km to go to the finish, the Sicilian Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain - Merida) tried to break away from the small group, but the Spaniard Gorka Izaguirre (Movistar), Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) and Valerio Conti (UAE Emirates) stayed on the bike. On the final climb Peschici, the Italian Valerio Conti slipped his racing bike on the ground in a bend, so that Visconti and Sanchez had to brake briefly. The Spaniard Izaguirre took advantage of the opportunity and ultimately relegated Visconti and Sanchez to second and third place.

Manuel Quinziato from Bolzano crossed the finish line 10.26 minutes behind.

On Sunday, in the ninth stage, there will be another mountain finish. The final climb to the blockhouse is 13 km and has an average gradient of 9%.

Giro d'Italia: Gorka Izaguirre wins in Peschici

For the third time, the breakaway group successfully crossed the finish line ahead of the main field. In the final climb of the eighth stage to Peschici, the Spaniard Gorka Izaguirre was finally the fastest. The pink jersey remains with Bob Jungels.
