Gschnitzer and Ilmer win the GP Penser Joch - PDF

In the last two years, Thomas Gschnitzer narrowly missed victory and ended up in second place. In the third attempt this Saturday, the Vipiteno native managed to achieve the long-awaited victory in one of the most famous South Tyrolean mountain races. Gschnitzer won the Penser Joch Grand Prix with a time of 59.23 minutes. The Wipptaler made the decisive attack long before climbing to the top of the pass that connects the Sarntal with Vipiteno. Five kilometers from the finish, Gschnitzer was already 35 seconds ahead of his worst opponents. And he skillfully defended this lead over the last, steep kilometers to the finish.

Michael Tumler took second place. The man from Merano crossed the finish line after 59.47 minutes and was therefore five seconds faster than Michael Obrist from Kalter, who finished third. The top three finishers were also the only participants who were able to complete the mountain classic in under an hour. However, Philip Götsch's course record from 2011, when the Tiroler reached the finish in 56.21 minutes, remained untouched on Saturday.

Third victory for Marina Ilmer

In the women's race, the cyclist who also holds the course record was ahead. It was Marina Ilmer from Tschars, who won in 1:05.41 hours, but was around a minute and a half slower than her record (1:04.13) from 2013. The woman from Vinschger, who finished the GP Penser Joch third overall Alexandra Hober from Merano (1:06.11) and Claudia Wegmann (1:10.35/Afing) won for the first time in her career.

As part of the GP Penser Joch, the hand-carved “Moser Bau” trophy is awarded every year to the most successful team. This year she got the Trentino team Brao Caffe' – Unterthurner. A total of 120 racing cyclists took part in the Penser Joch Grand Prix, which was also counted as the fourth stage of the South Tyrol Mountain Cup. In the overall standings of the series, Michael Tumler and Alexandra Hober are ahead with two races to go.

There were happy faces at the prize distribution at the Sarnen sports field not only among the participants, but also among the organizers. “Last year the weather put a damper on our plans. This year the conditions were perfect again and this is also reflected in the number of registrations. I would like to congratulate the winners on their success, but also all the other cyclists who made it to the Penser Joch. I would like to thank all of our volunteers, but of course also our sponsors, without whom we could not hold this race,” said OC boss Hartmann Stuefer, who and his team were responsible for organizing the Penser Joch Grand Prix for the tenth time .
