Manuel Quinziato wins final stage of the Eneco Tour

Manuel Quinziato has always performed well on the Eneco Tour. Nine years ago he just celebrated his first victory as a professional when he won a stage in the stage race in the Netherlands and Belgium. Last year, however, he made people sit up and take notice with fifth place in the second stage and fourth place in the time trial in Breda. This year, however, he impressed with seventh place in the time trial. However, this was not to be his best result at this year's Eneco Tour.

On today's final stage from St.Pieters-Leeuw to Geraardsbergen over 188,6 km, the 35-year-old from Bolzano was always in the leading group and even tore them apart with an attack around 50 km before the finish. The two Belgians Björn Leukemans and Yves Lampaert separated themselves from the South Tyrolean. The three athletes could no longer be caught and ultimately claimed victory among themselves. 5,7 kilometers from the finish, Quinziato launched the decisive attack, broke away from the two Belgians and finally crossed the finish line with a three-second lead as the deserved winner. Leukermans came second, Lampaert third, followed by Manuel Quinziato's teammate Greg Van Avermaet.

"Overjoyed" “Yesterday’s stage was too hard. I tried to defend my position in the overall standings, which unfortunately didn't quite work. The start today was very quick. There were 14 of us in the top group when I made my first attempt to break away. I tried it and it worked. During my second attack in the last few kilometers I just concentrated on looking ahead and giving it my all. In the last 500 meters I looked back and saw them coming . Then I said to myself: 'Either you make it or you die'. And in the end I did it. I’m over the moon,” said Quinziato after the race.

Quinziato recorded his last victory in February 2008 when he won two stages of the World's View Challenge in South Africa. After triumphing on the second stage in 2006, today's victory was his second success on the Eneco Tour. Last fall, Quinziato was part of the successful BMC Racing Team Equipe in the team time trial at the World Championships. Incidentally, the overall victory in the Eneco Tour was secured for the second time in a row by the Belgian Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal), followed by Van Avermaet (+0,59 minutes) and the Dutchman Wilco Kelderman (+1,17). Manuel Quinziato improved to 28th place overall (+8,36).

Manuel Quinziato wins final stage of the Eneco Tour

This Sunday, the Bolzano professional cyclist Manuel Quinziato won the seventh and final section of the Eneco Tour 2015 from St. Pieters-Leeuw to Geraardsbergen over 188,6 km and thus celebrated one of his greatest successes.
