“Azzurri” take a closer look at the World Cup course in Val Gardena

“We don’t want to leave anything to chance,” says head coach and 1997 cross-country world champion Hubert Pallhuber. “The main reason for our training course is the fine-tuning in a wide variety of areas, because everything has to fit together on race day and the team will only arrive at short notice during the World Cup week.” In addition, not all Italian World Cup participants know the route in detail, which is why certain sections are targeted must be taken with a magnifying glass.

The Italian cycling association FCI has called up the following athletes to the training camp in Val Gardena: Johnny Cattaneo (Team Selle San Marco-Trek), Damiano Ferraro (Team Selle San Marco-Trek), Elena Gaddoni (Scapin Soudal Pro Racing Team), Tony Longo ( Bianchi I.Idro Drain), Daniele Mensi (Scapin Soudal Pro Racing Team), Samuele Porro (Silmax X-Bionic Racing Team), Luca Ronchi (Repartosport-Leecougan), Daniela Veronesi Torpado Factory Team). Only Cattaneo had to miss the training camp due to illness.

The Italian team's top riders conduct their training sessions on the World Championship course every day between 7.30:16 a.m. and XNUMX p.m. This is primarily about coordination between athletes, masseurs, supervisors and mechanics, “because the right schedule also has to be coordinated.”

From a mechanical point of view, one incident in particular stands out. The technicians worked with the athletes to find out that the front chainring with 28 teeth is better suited to the extremely steep climbs of the South Tyrol Sellaronda HERO than the one with 30 teeth. The higher the number of teeth on the chainring, the more difficult it is for the athletes to overcome the grueling climbs around the Sella massif in the Dolomites. “Of course we try to adapt to the characteristics of each individual athlete,” adds the coach.

Some bikers have just returned from the altitude training camp in Livigno, which is why they are spending the night on the Sella Pass at an altitude of 2000 meters and not in Plan near Wolkenstein like the rest of the team.

The Norwegian Olympic champion and five-time marathon world champion Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjå is expected to train in Val Gardena next week.
