Bike Transalp: Geismayr and Pernsteiner achieve third success of the day

Behind Geismayr/Pernsteiner and Bishop/Hynek, the Italians Diego Cargnelutti and Johnny Cattaneo placed third. This meant that the “Azzurri” managed to make it onto the podium for the first time.

As on the previous days, the yellow jersey wearers had a high pace and the support of the second Centurion Vaude duo around the German Transalp Triple winners from 2013 to 2015, Jochen Käß and Markus Kaufmann, on the first climb to the Gfrillner Sattel tries to quickly break through the field at the front. “We then attacked again on the last climb to Monte Calisio, but were caught again on the descent,” explained Pernsteiner, who then secured the stage win in a direct duel with Hynek in the photo finish thanks to a clever maneuver. “We were side by side, and I just pushed my front wheel forward. That seemed to be enough."

His Czech opponent explained: “We actually had the feeling that we were ahead. Otherwise it was a good day because we made up time again in second place. So we can be satisfied, even though a stage win would have been nice."

In the Masters classification, former world champion Massimo Debertolis (ITA) and the amputee Costa Rican Dax Jaikel from Wilier Force 7C celebrated their fifth stage victory in a row (3:49.56,2). The two South Tyroleans Viktor Paris (Nals) and Thomas Piazza (Gröden) took second place, just over 14 minutes behind.

Bike Transalp: Geismayr and Pernsteiner achieve third success of the day

Daniel Geismayr and Hermann Pernsteiner won the fifth stage of the Bike Transalp 2017. After 84,73 km from Kaltern to Trento, the two Austrian defending champions prevailed in the finish sprint ahead of Jeremiah Bishop (USA) and Kristian Hynek (CZE).
