Bike Transalp: Defending champions win opening stage

The two Austrians triumphed in this year's queen stage of the MTB classic from Mayrhofen to Brixen (104 km - 3119 m) in 4:01.51,2 hours. The pairing of the American Jeremiah Bishop and the Czech Kristian Hynek came second (+24 seconds). The winners from 2013 and 2015, Jochen Käß and Markus Kaufmann (both from Germany), ended up in third place, 3:09 minutes behind.

In the women's race, the Swiss-Swedish pairing Esther Süss and Jennie Sternerhag secured the day's victory.

Former world champion Massimo Debertolis (ITA) and Dax Jaikel (CRC) dominated both Masters in 4:34.16. Thomas Piazza from Val Gardena and Viktor Paris from Nalles came second on the day, 4.37 minutes behind.

The 2nd stage on Monday leads from Brixen to St. Vigil (57 km - 2834 m). The Bike Transalp only leaves South Tyrol on Thursday as part of the fifth stage, in which the bikers will start in Kaltern and reach Trento after 85 km and 2619 meters above sea level.

Bike Transalp: Defending champions win opening stage

The starting signal for the seven-day mountain bike stage race for teams of two was given on Sunday. The opening stage with the finish in Brixen was won by the defending champions from Austria Daniel Geismayr and Hermann Pernsteiner. The South Tyrolean Piazza and Paris came in second at the Masters.
