Bike Transalp over: Laner and Debertolis celebrate at the Masters

Andreas Laner and Massimo Debertolis (Team AIL Trentino) were once again at the top of the podium in the master category on the last day, winning all seven daily classifications and the Bike Transalp 2014. The South Tyrolean-Trentino duo needed a total of 28 times to cross the Alps: 10.24 hours. “I am extremely satisfied,” says Andreas Laner, who successfully completed his ninth Transalp today. After two overall victories in the road Transalp, this was the first with a mountain bike (after two second places adR). “It was the hardest, but also the best success,” emphasizes the Gaiser. “Former world champion Debertolis supported me wherever he could and never said a bad word during all these days.” For the 44-year-old, it was supposed to be the last crossing of the Alps, even if he left a loophole open: “Maybe I’ll come back as a Grand Master when I’m 50.”

His Trentino partner Massimo Debertolis was able to celebrate his second Transalp victory after 2012 (back then he started with Marzio Deho) after several podium finishes, including with South Tyrolean professionals. “I haven't had such a good feeling in my legs and head for a long time,” says the 39-year-old from Transacqua. “This result encourages me to keep going. My goals next year include the Dolomiti Superbike and the marathon world championship at Sellaronda Hero 2015.” The second South Tyrolean master team with Viktor Paris and Thomas Piazza had to give up on the sixth stage and in a good position due to several mechanical defects.

Sixth place for Franz Hofer and Daniele Mensi In the men's category, Franz Hofer and his partner Daniele Mensi performed bravely due to their lack of experience in long-distance races. With a total time of 26:57.51 hours they came in sixth place. The Scott duo won the stage from Sarnthein to Kaltern and took third place the day before from Naturns to Sarnthein: “Getting on the podium in my hometown was the highest of all feelings,” says Hofer. “Now I want to specialize in marathons so that I can keep up with the top riders day after day. Daniele is only 26 and still needs to gain a lot of experience, for example, finding the right race division and not being easily disturbed when the top people attack."

The overall winners of the 17th Bike Transalp were the Germans Markus Kaufmann and Jochen Käß, who repeated their victory from last year. Their teammates Hannes Genze (D) and Daniel Geismayr (AUT) came in second ahead of third-placed Alban Lakata (Lienz) and Kristian Hynek (CZE), the winners of the last stage.

Platzgummer and Dellagiacoma second in the Grand Masters The South Tyrolean Transalp record winner Walter Platzgummer took second place overall in the Grand Masters in a team with Piergiorgio Dellagiacoma from Trentino after five second places, one fourth place and one tenth place. Just one day before the start, the Naturns native's original partner, Gilberto Perini, with whom he won the Transalp last year, was injured. That's why he had to find another comrade-in-arms at short notice. The category victory went to Heinz Zörweg (AUT) and Andrew Mclean (RSA/ 30:18.23 hours).

Jung and Aamodt third in the mixed category

In the mixed category, Daniel Jung from Latsch and Kristin Aamodt from Norway were unable to repeat their victory from last year. The category victory went to 2013 marathon runner-up Sally Bigham, who won six of seven stages together with her compatriot Ben Thomas. Jung and Aamodt came third in the category rankings.

Three of the seven stage locations were in South Tyrol (Naturns, Sarnthein, Kaltern). The total length of the Alpine crossing was 587,06 km (19.147 m). Since the first edition in 1998, the South Tyrolean teams of two have won eight times: once in the men's category, four times in the masters category, twice in the Grand Master class and once in the mixed category. They also captured 22 podium places, including 13 second and nine third places.
