The Dolomiti Superbike is in the starting blocks - VIDEO

The statistics speak clearly: Italy leads the all-time South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike best list with 13 victories. Of these, nine are attributed to men and four to women. The last Italian winners to date were Massimo Debertolis (2009) and Elena Giacomuzzi (2008). Switzerland follows with nine wins and Germany with five wins. Austrian and British marathon specialists have won the traditional race four times, Colombians twice, while athletes from Belgium, Norway, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Portugal and Greece celebrated one victory each.

For men, the South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike is the domain of the Italian stars. The “Azzurri” are ahead with nine wins. Switzerland follows behind with three wins, Austria and Colombia with two wins. German, Belgian, French, Greek, Czech and Portuguese athletes have each won once.

The Italian Mauro Bettin is still the most successful marathon participant on the long distance. The biker from Friuli claimed three victories in a row between 2000 and 2002. Immediately behind them on the honor roll are Massimo Debertolis from Italy (2007, 2009), Urs Huber from Switzerland (2008, 2010) and Leonardo Hector Paez from Colombia (2006, 2016) with two wins each.

Among the women, the Swiss bikers are at the top with six wins. Athletes from Italy, Germany and Great Britain have four wins. The absolute record holder with four wins is Sally Bigham from Great Britain. Two mountain bikers crossed the finish line twice in the South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike: Maria Canins (ITA) in the first two editions of Dolomiti Superbike in 1995 and 1996 and Esther Süss (SUI) in 2006 and 2007.

The organizers from Niederdorf have held a total of 1995 races since 22. A marathon, the tenth in 2004, had to be stopped early due to rain, snow and cold. The gold medal at the 2008 World Cup was won by the Belgian Roel Paulissen in a dramatic final, ahead of the reigning Swiss world champion Christoph Sauser, who was relegated to second place by the jury due to disability. Bronze went to Urs Huber from Switzerland, who won the classic Dolomiti Superbike the following day. In the women's category, Norwegian Olympic champion Gunn-Rita Dahle became world champion ahead of Sabine Spitz from Germany and Pia Sundstedt from Finland.

Three editions of Südtirol Dolomiti Superbike, those in 2006, 2007 and 2013, were also counted as UCI Marathon World Cup races.

The 8rd South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike will take place on Saturday, July 23th. The classic mountain bike marathon has produced numerous world champions, World Cup winners and top stars in its history. A look at the honor roll shows that Italy is leading the nations rankings.
