The Marlene South Tyrol Sunshine Race is taking place in Nals this weekend for the 19th time. While the technical competitions for the young athletes are on the program on Saturday, the bikers compete in the cross-country races on Sunday. The elite races as part of the second stage of the “Internazionali d'Italia” racing series in the afternoon are eagerly awaited.

Kerschbaumer is the favorite Among the men, Verdinger Gerhard Kerschbaumer is considered the big favorite to win. The vice world champion has never made it onto the podium in Nals - he wants to change that on Sunday. But the competition is strong again. His biggest competitors in the fight for victory are likely to be the French Maxime Marotte and Stephane Tempier and the German Manuel Fumic. In the elite men's category, Kerschbaumer is the only starter from South Tyrol. Lechner wants to be on the podium It's the women's turn before the men. Then Eva Lechner also wants to be at the forefront. The woman from Eppan has not taken part in the Sunshine Race in recent years because, as an athlete on the US Luna team, she had to attend appointments overseas. Lechner last took second place in Nals in 2015.

In her “Nals comeback” Lechner wants to play a good role again and at least get a podium place. She has already won her home race four times (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013). Other big names in the women's race include the Ukrainian Jana Belomoina, the Dutch Anne Tauber and Linda Indergand and Sina Frei from Switzerland. In addition to Lechner, three other South Tyroleans are taking part in the women's competition: Greta Seiwald from Gsies, Anna Oberparleiter from Olanger and Eva Maria Gatscher from Bolzano.
