Olympia: The South Tyrolean field of participants is taking shape

Gerhard Kerschbaumer and Eva Lechner have been among the best cross-country mountain bikers in Italy for years. That's why they can't be missed at the Olympics. It has been clear since Wednesday that Italy has four starting places in Tokyo. Due to the current position in the world rankings, two of them should go to Kerschbaumer and Lechner. It's not official yet, but it would have to be the devil if the two cycling stars don't fight for precious metal in the Japanese metropolis at the end of July. Lechner from Eppan will take part in the Olympic Games for the fourth time. Since 2008 she has never missed the biggest sporting event in the world, but she hasn't really warmed up to the five rings yet: 16th place in 2008 is the reigning vice world champion's best result. Kerschbaumer from Verdings, on the other hand, took part in the Olympics once, in London in 2012, when he came 13th. The men's Olympic cross-country competition is on July 26th, the women's one day later. 10 starters are almost fixed So far, Stefano Ballo (swimming), Simone Giannelli (volleyball), Michael Piccolruaz (sport climbing) and Jannik Sinner (tennis) already have their tickets in their pockets. In addition to Kerschbaumer and Lechner, Raphaela Folie (volleyball), Verena Steinhauser (triathlon), Debora Vivarelli (table tennis) and Petra Nardelli (athletics) are almost always there. If these ten local athletes travel to the Olympics, the South Tyrol record from 2008 would be equalized. Two other athletes, Elena Pirrone (cycling) and Laura Letrari (swimming), still have a small chance of taking part.
