Dolomiti Superbike: A domain of marathon specialists

The organizers from Niederdorf have held a total of 1995 races since 16. A marathon, the tenth in 2004, had to be stopped early due to rain, snow and cold. Two editions of Südtirol Dolomiti Superbike, those from 2006 and 2007, were also counted as UCI Marathon World Cup races. Added to this is the 2008 UCI Marathon World Championships, which took place the day before the 14th edition.

The statistics speak clearly: Italy leads the all-time South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike best list with 13 victories. Of these, nine are attributed to men and four to women. Switzerland follows with eight and Germany with four wins. Austrian marathon specialists have won the traditional race twice, with athletes from Finland, France and Colombia taking one victory each.

For men, the South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike is the domain of the Italian stars. The “Azzurri” have won 60% of all races with nine victories. Switzerland follows behind with two wins, Germany, Austria, France and Colombia with one win each. The most successful marathon participant on the long distance is the Italian Mauro Bettin. The Friulian achieved three wins in a row between 2000 and 2002. Massimo Debertolis from Italy (2007 and 2009) and Urs Huber (2008 and 2010) from Switzerland are right behind on the honor roll, each with two wins.

The Swiss bikers have won 40% of all races with six victories, followed by Italy with four (26%) and Germany with three (20%) successes. Two mountain bikers crossed the finish line twice in the South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike: Maria Canins (ITA) in the first two editions of Dolomiti Superbike in 1995 and 1996 and Esther Süss (SUI) in 2006 and 2007.

In 2008, the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championship was held in Niederdorf. The gold medal was won by the Belgian Roel Paulissen in a dramatic final, ahead of the reigning Swiss world champion Christoph Sauser, who was relegated to second place by the jury due to obstruction. Bronze went to Urs Huber from Switzerland, who won the classic Dolomiti Superbike the following day. In the women's category, Norwegian Olympic champion Gunn-Rita Dahle became world champion ahead of Sabine Spitz from Germany and Pia Sundstedt from Finland.

In 2006 and 2007 UCI Marathon World Cup races took place in Niederdorf. Esther Süss won twice in the women's category, while Leonardo Paez from Colombia and Massimo Debertolis from Italy won once in the men's category.
