Dolomiti Superbike: Sarai and Gulino win on the short distance

With Sarai, Fontana and Marco Rebagliati, three riders reached the home straight of the South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike almost at the same time today, and 27-year-old Sarai won the sprint. “I gave it my all, but winning in a sprint is always difficult,” said the Sardinian after the race. Although he completed the long route last year, today's race was a tough one. “I really had to give it my all,” said Sarai, who also complimented the organizers: “The route is beautiful and what the organizers did after yesterday’s storm is incredible.”

Local hero Klaus Fontana from Olang, who won the South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike 2010, came in second today. “I'm extremely satisfied, the result is perfect,” said Fontana despite the defeat in the sprint. He attributes this to the fact that he had a shorter memory of crossing the finish line in Niederdorf. “That’s why I maybe started the sprint a little too early,” said the 44-year-old.

Third-place finisher Marco Rebagliati from Liguria is 17 years younger than Fontana. According to the 27-year-old, he had to struggle especially on the climb to Plätzwiese. On the descent he was able to catch up with the leading duo, but “then he no longer had enough strength for the sprint”.

Anna Oberparleiter again came second in the women's race Unlike the men's race, the women's short distance was a clear affair today. Nina Gulino, born in 1988, was able to break away from the field on the first climb and by the end she was more than one and a half minutes ahead of Anna Oberparleiter from Olanger. Nevertheless: “I had to fight at the end,” said the Sicilian Gulino, who took part in the South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike for the first time and – no big surprise – already announced today: “I’ll be back!”

Meanwhile, local hero Oberparleiter was still struggling with the fate of the Dolomiti Superbike. Second last year, second this year: “It seems like I just can’t win this race,” said the 27-year-old, who at least now knows the reason for this: “I had heavy legs on the first climb and I know “In any case, I’m struggling after two hours of driving,” said the cross-country and Eliminator specialist. She risked everything on the descent from the Plätzwiese today, but it wasn't quite enough.

Behind Gulino and Oberparleiter, Nicol Guidolin from Trieste came in third today. She lost the sprint against Oberparleiter. “It was an incredible sprint,” said Guidolin, who was still extremely satisfied. “I was second for a long time and actually hoped to be able to hold on to that place until the end, but in the end third place is more than I expected,” said the 34-year-old.

This year the “short” route of the South Tyrol Dolomiti Superbike led clockwise over 60 kilometers from Niederdorf via Toblach and Lake Toblach into the Hohlensteintal to Schluderbach and from there via the Plätzwiese and Braies back to Niederdorf. The route had to climb 1785 meters in altitude.
