Dolomiti Superbike: What happened so far

No wonder that the Dolomiti Superbike enjoys great popularity in the boot state and in the host region of South Tyrol. Nevertheless, there are one or two surprises to be seen. Colombia is in second place among the men with four wins. This is largely thanks to one of the record winners: Hector Leonardo Paez Leon has already won the marathon distance of over 100 kilometers three times. In 2006, when the Dolomiti Superbike was also a stage of the UCI World Cup, in 2016 and a year ago. With three victories over the longest distance, he shares the title as record winner with the Swiss Urs Huber and the Italian Mauro Bettin. Huber was on the highest podium in 2008, 2010 and 2011 and will be chasing his fourth title again this year. Bettin, however, was the marathon winner in 2000, 2001 and 2002. There is one mountain biker who has won more times than these three. It's Massimo De Bertolis. The Italian crossed the finish line of the Dolomiti Superbike first five times, once on the marathon distance and four more times on the 60-kilometer route of the MTB classic. In the latter, he is the sole record holder. The mountain biker from Veneto is at the start again this year and is aiming for his sixth Dolomiti Superbike triumph. In addition to De Bertolis, there is another athlete who won both the marathon and the classic. His name is Klaus Fontana and he comes from Olang. In 2007 he won the long route, then in 2010 the short one. The Pusterer is also at the start again this year. A British woman stands out among the women Italy is also by far the strongest nation among women with 30 successes. A Swiss woman celebrated eight times at the Dolomiti Superbike, followed by Germany and Austria five times each. With four wins – all over the marathon distance – Great Britain is in fifth place. The same woman won all four: Sally Bigham was not considered a competitor in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016. “Iron Sally”, as she is known on the island and among mountain bike connoisseurs, is the record winner among women. The Italian Maria Canins has three Dolomiti Superbike victories to her name. She was the fastest in the marathon at the premiere in 1995 and defended her title the following year. In 2002 she then triumphed in the classic. Along with the Swiss Anita Steiner (the marathon in 2002, the classic in 2007), Canins is the only one who was successful at both distances. These are the big names this year The 27th edition of the Dolomiti Superbike will take place this Saturday, July 9th. Then thousands of mountain bikers will get back on their saddles. Some big names in the scene have already registered, and several of them have already won at least once. For men, you have to keep an eye on the cross-country Olympic champions Jaroslav Kulhavý and Miguel Martinez as well as the reigning European marathon champion Fabian Rabensteiner - he won the classic in 2015. We can also be excited about Tiago Ferreira, the winner of the marathon in 2015. The Portuguese is considered one of the big stars of the scene.
