Eva Lechner is the sole record holder with her fourth victory

The Italian champion won ahead of Blaza Klemencic from Slovenia and Elisabeth Osl from Austria. Sabine Spitz came in fourth place. With her victory today, Lechner overtook Olympic champion Gunn-Rita Dahle, who had won three times so far, in the leaderboard. The women had to cover 26,6km - and the men had to cover seven 36,6km. The race was part of the “Internazionali d'Italia Series”. A new participant record was reached with 750 registrations.

The men's race

The Olympic fifth-place finisher in London, Manuel Fumic, needed 36,76:1 hours for the 38.10 km. He beat the surprising 18-year-old New Zealander Anton Cooper by 43 seconds. The Frenchman Miguel Martinez, who at the age of 1,49 only recently returned to racing, crossed the finish line 37 seconds behind. Fumic increased the rhythm in the second lap and shook off his closest pursuer up to that point, the Italian Luca Braidot. In third place, South Tyrolean Gerhard Kerschbaumer fell on the second lap and broke his saddle. After switching to a new bike, he finished the race in twelfth place. Fumic constantly increased his lead, while on his rear wheel Braidot, Cooper, Skarnitzl and Martinez fought a bitter battle for the places. Initially, Cooper was able to catch up to Braidot and overtake him on the fourth lap. By the sixth lap, Martinez had fought his way up to third place. “Despite my breakdown, I am satisfied because my form is good and I also had a good feeling,” said Kerschbaumer after the race.

The women's race

In the women's category, the 2009-year-old South Tyrolean Eva Lechner triumphed for the fourth time after 2010, 2012 and 27. She distanced the Slovenian champion, Blaza Klemencic, 33, by 1 seconds after 28.19:32 hours. The Austrian World Cup winner from 1,44, Elisabeth Osl, came in third, 2010 minutes behind. The Beijing Olympic champion Sabine Spitz came fourth (+3,07 minutes). Eva Lechner finished the starting lap just behind Lisi Osl, but was then able to immediately take the lead, which she didn't relinquish until the end. Lechner already attacked in the second lap in order to overtake Blaza Klemencic, especially on the descent. She was able to gain a small lead, which she increased to 50 meters in the third lap, at the highest point of the race, the “Keschtnigl”. At the end of the third lap the lead over the Slovenian had decreased to 14”. Klemencic didn't let up, but was no longer able to get close to Lechner on the descents. The Polish Dawidowicz came fifth and the Argentinian Alvarez came sixth. “Eva drove tactically cleverly and studied her competitors well from the start,” says the race director of the Italian association, former world champion Hubert Pallhuber. “It was by no means easy to keep Blaza Klemencic under control.”

"I am very happy. My audience gave me strength. I love driving in Nalles. During the first three laps, some juniors were ahead of us, which hindered us. In the first few descents I didn't manage to ski the way I wanted. I knew that Blaza was very strong, so I tried to get off to a good start. “I really pushed the pedals on the short, steep climbs and that was crucial because the descents weren’t a problem,” says Lechner.

Italy leads the nations rankings

In the nations ranking we find athletes from ten countries. Italy is at the top with eleven wins. Six successes went to the women and five to the men. Norway appears behind Italy in the rankings with three wins, ahead of Germany, Belgium, Spain and Switzerland with two wins each.

New record: 750 participants from 20 nations

With 750 athletes from 20 nations, a new participant record was achieved at the 13th edition of the “Marlene South Tyrol Sunshine Race”. This once again made it one of the best mountain bike races in Italy.

“I am very satisfied with this year's event. There was already a great atmosphere during the school and youth races in the morning and hundreds of spectators made a pilgrimage to the most spectacular parts of the course to secure a great place,” said Pallweber.

Together with the events in Bad Säckingen (D), Haiming (A) and Graz/Stattegg (A), the international cross country race is part of the UEC Mountain Bike European Cup for juniors and U23 riders. “Being included in the racing calendar is a great honor for us,” says Pallweber, “because it shows that Nals also has a good reputation abroad.” For the eighth time, the classic event has been included in the “Internazionali d'Ìtalia Series” racing series and for the second time, as the only race in Italy, in the Austrian mountain bike league.

Spectacular XC Eliminator Raiffeisen Sprint

On Saturday the spectacular XC Eliminator Raiffeisen Sprint took place through the center of Nals. The Austrian Daniel Federspiel repeated his victory from last year. He won ahead of the Italians Martino Fruet and Giulio Valfré. . In the women's category, local hero Eva Lechner beat her teammate Nathalie Schneitter from Switzerland for the second time. South Tyrolean Julia Innerhofer came third.
