Gerhard Kerschbaumer wins U23 World Cup in Pietermarizburg

For the 19-year-old from Verdins, it is the first World Cup victory in the U23 age group. Last year Kerschbaumer took 23th place at the U5 World Championships in Mount Sainte Anne, Canada, but two years ago he won two gold medals in the relay and in the junior individual race at the World Championships in Canberra.

Victory in the elite class today went to the Swiss Nino Schurter. Frenchman Julien Absalon, Olympic champion in 18 and 2004, took silver, 2008 seconds behind, and Czech Jaroslav Kulhavy took bronze. Marco Aurelio Fontana came fifth as the best “Azzurro”.

Eva Lechner 15th among women In the women's elite race, China's Chengyuan Ren came out ahead of France's Julie Bresset and Russia's Irina Kalentieva. Eva Lechner from Eppan, who started for the Colnago-Arreghini-South Tyrol team, had to be content with 15th place, 7.02 minutes behind the winner. Her teammate Nathalie Schneitter did better, finishing sixth. Judith Pollinger from Nals took 52nd place. The Norwegian Elisabeth Sveum won in the U23 age group. Anna Oberparleiter finished twelfth, over 10 minutes behind.

Gerhard Kerschbaumer wins U23 World Cup in Pietermarizburg

Gerhard Kerschbaumer, the great hope of the Italian national mountain bike team, won the first U23 World Cup race of the season in Pietermarizburg in South Africa today, 18 seconds ahead of the Austrian Alexander Gehbauer and 1.10 minutes ahead of the Pole Marek Konwa.
