Young MTB national champions crowned – an overview of the winners

The South Tyrol Cup final for mountain bikers was not the only thing on the agenda in Casies on Sunday (see own report) , but also the last stage of the VSS trophy for the young bikers. The national champions were also determined at the same time. The club ranking went to the Sunshine Racers from Nals with 787 points. The most national championship titles, namely 13 out of 36 possible, were won by young drivers from ASV St. Lorenzen.

It was a small anniversary in the Pichl/Gsies sports zone: For the 15th time in a row, the VSS/Raiffeisen State Mountain Bike Championships took place in the Puster municipality. At the traditional end of the season, South Tyrol's young mountain bikers once again showed all their skills over two days. VSS cycling speaker Erwin Schuster was able to welcome around 200 children from all parts of the country at the Easy Down and Dual competitions on Saturday and at the Cross County on Sunday. In keeping with the VSS annual motto “Sport {CLUB}”, young athletes from neighboring provinces also took part.

The young bikers were unimpressed by the sometimes bad weather conditions and the wet route. While it rained off and on on Saturday, it stayed at least mostly dry on Sunday. Nevertheless, the slippery route around the Pichl sports zone was a challenge for the young bikers on both days.

Exciting races The Dual and Easy Down competitions were on the program on Saturday. In the Dual Slalom - a parallel slalom in which the drivers compete directly against each other in a knockout system - Marcel Ellecosta won the race in the U18 age group (born 2000 to 2003) by a narrow margin ahead of Jan Laner. After 2 runs he had a lead of just 5 hundredths.

The “Easy Down” was also decided on Saturday afternoon, which is a simple type of downhill in which the children start individually, often only a few hundredths above the medal ranks.

The highlight of the program was the cross country competition on Sunday. Marie Kirchler's performance was particularly impressive. The mountain biker from ASV St. Lorenzen won the race in the U8 category (children 1, born in 2010/2011) among girls with a lead of more than 55 seconds over Mara Hintner (SSV Pichl/Gsies). Kirchler's time was so good that she even narrowly missed the podium in the boys' category. St. Lorenzen wins title – club ranking goes to Nals Most of the VSS/Raiffeisen state championship titles in the Gsiesertal went to St. Lorenzen, namely 13 out of 36 possible titles. Incidentally, the youngest person in the team was mainly responsible for this: Mia Pedevilla won all three competitions in Gsies in the U6 age group (Baby/JG 2012 and younger). A feat that was otherwise only achieved by Isabel Leitgeb from ASC Olang in the U10 age group (children/JG 2008/2009). However, the children and young people of the Sunshine Racers from Nals once again secured the club ranking with 787 points.

At the award ceremony, VSS speaker Erwin Schuster and VSS chairman Günther Andergassen were able to see satisfied faces. “No matter what placement you took, you are all winners,” emphasized Andergassen in his greetings. Schuster was pleased that around 200 young drivers came to the state championships again. “This shows that mountain biking continues to be very popular with children and young people,” said the VSS speaker.
