Beaming faces as far as the eye could see. Above all, OK boss Gerhard Vanzi, who spoke of great joy and satisfaction. “We organized the race for the first time three years ago. When the Italian association asked me whether we would like to organize the World Cup in 2015, I thought they were trying to kid me. After a short period of reflection, we applied – and now we have been awarded the contract. It’s a dream,” said Vanzi at the Hotel Laurin in Bolzano.

From June 26th to June 28th 2015, the best long-distance mountain bikers will be guests in South Tyrol. There will only be a few changes to the route; a path is currently being created at the Gardena Pass. The long route is 82 kilometers long with an altitude difference of 4350 meters, the short route is around 60 with an altitude difference of almost 3000 meters.

“The 100 best elite riders and the best 50 female elite riders will be at the start. After the start of the professionals comes the start of the amateurs, who set out to hunt for the best mountain bikers in the world,” explained Vanzi. This means that the Sellaronda Hero remains a race for thousands of amateur athletes, with the upgrade being also the marathon world championship. This formula will be “tested” next year. In 2013 and 2014 the Sellaronda Hero is part of the UCI MTB Marathon World Series. This is nothing other than the World Cup for long-distance specialists. Next year the race will take place on June 15th.

New racing office at Nives-Platz in Wolkenstein

As far as infrastructure is concerned, Val Gardena already has most of the facilities required by the UCI. Only the competition office will be relocated and moved to its own premises at Nives-Platz in Wolkenstein - directly at the finish line of the Hero. “The community of Wolkenstein has already assured us of their help here,” explained visionary Vanzi.

The two young South Tyrolean mountain bikers Gerhard Kerschbaumer and Julia Innerhofer were also present at the press conference. Both are ambassadors for the Sellaronda Hero, Innerhofer will now be promoting the South Tyrolean MTB event at races in China and Malaysia. “I could imagine competing in the Maraton World Championships in 2015. The similarity to cross country is great. But there are still three years until then,” explained Innerhofer. Kerschbaumer is also very excited about starting at the home World Cup. “I don’t want to rule it out. “Let’s see what the future will bring,” he said.
